How to Spot an Authentic Chanel Bag?
As superfakes (highly detailed counterfeit bags) become increasingly difficult to distinguish from
genuine pieces, identifying an authentic Chanel bag has become more challenging than ever.
Although there is no official guide for authenticating Chanel bags, there are several key
characteristics you can look for. In this article, I will share comparisons based on my own
experience to help explain how to distinguish an authentic Chanel bag from a counterfeit one.
1. Chanel Logo and ‘Made in’ Stamp
Check the Chanel logo and the ‘Made in’ stamp inside the bag. The Chanel logo should be clear,
sharp, and neatly placed. Pay close attention to the font and shape of the letters. The letters should be well-defined, perfectly formed, and fit together precisely. The ‘Made in’ stamp appears beneath the logo and reads either ‘Made in France’ or ‘Made in Italy’. The stamp should be positioned accurately and directly below the logo. On some models, the ‘Made in’ stamp may be located elsewhere inside the bag, but the quality and finish remain the same.

2. Quilting
Pay close attention to how the quilting runs across the bag. The lines should be straight and
continue smoothly across both the body of the bag and the flap. On authentic Chanel bags, the
quilting aligns perfectly, even across pockets and seams. On some counterfeit bags, the quilting
may appear correct at first glance, but small inconsistencies become visible around seams and
corners.

3. Stitching
Examine the stitching carefully. It should be straight, neat, and consistent throughout the entire bag. Authentic Chanel bags typically feature fine, evenly spaced stitches. The stitching should flow smoothly through the leather. If the stitching appears sloppy, differs in color, or does not run evenly, it may indicate that the bag is not authentic.

4. Hologram Sticker
From the mid-1980s until April 2021, Chanel used hologram stickers inside its bags. The sticker is
usually located in the lower left interior of the bag, either on the lining or on a small leather or fabric
tab. The serial number can be used to determine the bag’s production year. Signs of damage,
tampering, or replacement may indicate a counterfeit bag.

5. Authenticity Card
Chanel bags with a hologram sticker were supplied with a matching authenticity card until April
2021. The number on the card should match the serial number inside the bag. Make sure the
number corresponds exactly and that the card feels sturdy with a clear, high-quality print. The
absence of an authenticity card does not automatically mean that a bag is not authentic. Since the
introduction of the microchip system in April 2021, authenticity cards are no longer provided.

6. Microchip
Since April 2021, Chanel has replaced the hologram sticker with a microchip. Newer bags no longer have a serial number sticker or authenticity card. Instead, a microchip is embedded in the bag and can be identified by a small plate located inside. This plate also contains a unique code. Pay attention to the quality of the plate, the logo, and the code displayed on it.

In my experience, there is never a single detail that determines whether a bag is authentic.
Sometimes a bag appears perfect at first glance, but closer inspection reveals details that do not
match. In other cases, a bag may initially raise concerns yet ultimately prove to be authentic. That is why it is important to assess the overall picture rather than relying on one characteristic alone.
Recognizing an authentic Chanel bag remains difficult, especially now that superfakes are
becoming increasingly hard to distinguish from genuine pieces. If you have doubts about the
authenticity of a Chanel bag, or if it is a particularly valuable piece, it is wise to obtain a professional authentication before making a purchase.
