An authentic bag: not everything with a label is real

The truth behind Vinted and Vestiaire’s authentication services

Across Europe, more and more people are buying designer bags through large online platforms such as Vinted and Vestiaire Collective. Alongside their wide selection, many of these platforms also offer an authentication service. For a small extra fee, it looks like you are buying peace of mind. But authenticating a designer bag takes knowledge, time, and an eye for the smallest details, and that is exactly what is often missing in these quick platform checks.

In practice, I still see plenty of counterfeit bags being sold, often even with an authenticity label or tag attached. Many buyers believe they are purchasing authentic designer bags, but in reality, these so-called checks are usually rushed and lack the depth you would expect. But honestly, what kind of quality can you expect for €10?

Authentication for €10? Too good to be true

On Vinted, you can add an extra authentication service for designer handbags for €10. Vestiaire Collective charges €15 on top of their existing selling fee. For such a small amount, quite a lot has to happen: receiving the parcel, unpacking it, checking the bag, repacking it, and shipping it again. The platforms are not very open about how this process actually works. What I do know from experience is that fake designer bags still slip through every single day, bags that nevertheless receive a label or note claiming they are authentic. It shows there simply is not enough time or focus on the tiny details that truly separate a genuine bag from a fake one, like the shape of a heat stamp, a slight irregularity in the stitching, or a date code that does not match the production year.

Differences between platforms

Vinted: this platform is hugely popular, mainly because of its low selling fees. For clothing or accessories under one or two hundred euros, that works fine, the risks are relatively small. But when it comes to luxury bags and higher-value items, things get riskier. In my work, I receive daily requests to verify bags bought through Vinted that turn out to be fake, often even with a label or message of authenticity. It shows that knowing how to verify a designer bag is still essential, no matter what the platform promises.

Vestiaire Collective: at this platform, bags are often sent to Vestiaire first, where they are physically checked by experts. This costs an extra €15, on top of the commission fee. Recently, however, Vestiaire introduced a direct shipping option: for items under roughly one thousand euros, the buyer can choose to have the bag shipped straight from the seller, without a physical inspection. In that case, the check happens digitally, mostly automated, using image recognition and AI systems that assess photos for sharpness, consistency, and possible irregularities. The seller has no say in that process, which makes it less clear and riskier for both buyer and seller.

eBay (Europe): does not offer an actual authentication service. In the United States, an official authenticity check for designer handbags does exist, but it has not been rolled out everywhere in Europe yet. Buyers here mostly rely on trust, with only the protection of eBay’s money-back guarantee.

Catawiki: the review here is based solely on photos, evaluated by in-house experts, possibly supported by automated systems. That method remains vulnerable, since certain details are difficult to judge from photos alone. True authentication often requires additional pictures, clearer images, and communication with the seller, something platforms rarely have time for. According to publicly available information, Catawiki mainly relies on in-house experts reviewing photos and descriptions. It is not publicly known to what extent automated systems are involved.

Marktplaats: no checks whatsoever, everything depends on the buyer’s trust in the seller. For luxury designer bags, this is by far the riskiest option.

Why independent authentication really matters

An authenticity label may feel reassuring, but it is no guarantee. Most platform checks are quick and lack the attention needed to provide real certainty. If you are investing in a luxury bag, you deserve the confidence of knowing it is genuinely authentic. That is why an independent authentication company, one that takes the time, has the expertise, and is not tied to a platform, can make all the difference. It is the most reliable luxury bag authentication option and helps prevent disappointment, financial loss, and that awful feeling of being misled.
